I couldn’t see him too hot from where I was sitting on one of the four Lazy Boys in the Gulfstream. But I could make out his figure, especially given his footwear.
I was excited as I stretched up from my seat as soon as the seatbelt signs went off. I let my Girl Friday, Hannah get my hand carry, which is something I rarely do. I’ve been raised to be independent despite the privileged life my parents afforded me and I hate being waited on, but this was an exception.
I practically slid down the plane into his arms. He hugged me tightly and kissed me like it was our first time. I had to cut my trip in Singapore short when I heard the happy news.
“We’re having twins this time,” he chattered excitedly. He told me the IVF at the fertility clinic was successful and that all we need to do is carry the embryos to full term. The eggs and sperm were screened and so far the DNA scans came clean. We can expect an easy pregnancy and healthy babies afterwards.
“Fraternal, just like you wanted.” There were tears in my husband’s eyes. “First a daughter, then a son, and now this. I never even expected anymore children.”
“It really is a miracle, isn’t it” I was hugging my husband tight. “Are you sure you’re okay with getting a surrogate? We can ask the doctors again if I could carry the twins, you never know.”
“God, no. We both know you’re not up to it so don’t insist. Jean offered to do it again. Her last hurrah, she said,” tears were still streaming down his face.
“I hope they both look like you,” I said. I’ve been married to him for eighteen years but my husband never fails to take my breath away. I’m of the opinion he’s the most gorgeous man on the planet and he grows even more handsome as the years go by.
He laughed then. I wiped his tears with my fingers and kissed his cheeks. The taste of saline set off tears in my eyes again. “No, I hope they both look and take after you. They’d be practically angels then,” he laughed again.
“Quit teasing,” my brows furrowed. We both know I have an evil temper and that we’ve only stayed together this long because he’s been so understanding every time we had a row.
“So, when are we going to tell our parents?” I asked as we walked arm in arm to the car. “Oh, that can wait. We can pretend we made the twins tonight. I booked us the bridal suite at the Shangri-la, to celebrate. Mama and Papa will take the kids for the weekend,” he winked at me.
“Oooh you evil man you. I want to go to the hospital!”
“Get some rest; it’s all taken care of. Charlie’s over there taking care of the whole thing. Reese even got a documentarist for the process. You know how crazy your parents get over things like these. Especially your Mom, you’re her only child and she thinks that gives her rights,” he was guffawing now.
I turned red trying to check my tongue. I didn’t want to say anything out of turn on this happy occasion. I stuck it out at him instead.
“Come here you,” he wrapped both arms around me, snuggling against me in the backseat of the black Bentley.
I kissed him then.
“You think God will listen again and give us sextuplets next time? I always wanted a basketball team.”
